CMV is the most common virus transmitted in utero.

The mortality rate in patients with symptomatic congenital CMV may be as high as 20%.

Sequelae such as hearing loss, mental retardation, delayed motor development, chorioretinitis and optic atrophy, seizures, language delays, and learning disability occur in 90% of symptomatic survivors.

The incidence of complications is 5-15% in asymptomatic infants; the most frequent complication is Hearing loss, which can be progressive.
