* This syndrome is a sign of improving immune health.

*Usually occur in the first 2 months after starting HIV therapy.

*May occur in about 20% of the people starting ART.

* First identified when several patients developed CMV after they started HIV treatment.

* Common infections associated with IRIS include cryptococcal meningitis, cytomegalovirus infections, mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) infections, tuberculosis (TB) and Pneumocystis jiroveci pneumonia (formerly known as Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia).

* There is no specific treatment for immune restoration syndrome. Continued HIV treatment strengthens the immune system. This normally takes care of any infections that emerge.

* In rare cases, the immune system can be suppressed with steroids to ease inflammation
